Pallanza holds a long history of tourism; thanks to its optimal natural setting, it became a destination for European aristocrats as early as the 18th century.
Tourist demand continues to grow, creating the need for new accommodation facilities.
Hotel Belvedere, located right in front of the ferry terminal and next to the San Gottardo, was originally named Belle Vue and was intended to welcome tourists looking for a comfortable and tasteful environment.
Hotel San Gottardo was built in 1890. Initially, it was an inn — a stopover for stagecoaches and carriages to change horses — serving travelers heading toward the Simplon Pass.
During World War II, it became a refuge for evacuees, especially from Lombardy, particularly Milan. During this time, the mother of journalist and writer Paolo Mosca stayed at Hotel San Gottardo. He was born in Pallanza in 1943 and was the brother of Maurizio Mosca, journalist and television host.
